About ten years ago a woman from America felt the Lord calling her to Uganda to help the many orphaned and suffering children there. After a year or so, she started an orphanage with a native Ugandan man, who she thought was good and trustworthy. It turned out, however, that his motives were very selfish and that he really was not concerned for the welfare of the children. Not knowing this at the time, the woman left the children in the care of this man and his wife. It wasn’t long before she found out the truth, but because of the power and influence of this man, she couldn’t do anything to change the circumstances or help the children. Due to many different circumstances, the woman had to leave Uganda, and leave the children in that place where she knew they were not well taken care of. When she returned to the United States, she went to the churches which were supporting the man and tried to explain to them what had happened. Naturally, they questioned the man and made him answer to the accusations. Because he is such a deceptive man, he was able to convince the churches that her stories were just that, and that the children were all doing very well. Both of the major sponsors took his side and continued sending the money they thought was supporting the children. I went to Uganda in 2005 with my pastor and a couple others, and returned for the second time in January 2007. During the first trip, we heard about the orphanage and some of the things that were going on there, but nothing much came of the stories. The second visit was a different story. Some of the children who had been in the home had run away because of the harsh conditions and I had a chance to sit and talk with six of them. The stories that I heard directly from these children who were themselves the victims were horrible. They told stories of severe cruelty, of beatings, malnutrition, and overworking. It was not only these few children who were mistreated, but all of them, from the youngest to the oldest. The man and his wife that own the land and run the home were becoming very wealthy at the expense of the children. They use the money that the sponsors send for personal gain, giving only enough to the children to keep them alive. Now What? Since God chose to allow me to hear the stories of these children, I can’t turn my back and pretend I don’t know of their plight. God has placed a serious burden upon my heart to do something to help improve the lives of these young ones. And to show them that the real love of their God is nothing like what they have been shown during the years they have spent at this place. There are somewhere near a hundred kids staying at this home who are still having to endure these hardships. There is an immediate need of helping support the few who were able to escape. The biggest need is for these to be put back into school. Along with their education, the school fees will house, feed, and clothe them. But, there is a much greater task that the Lord has laid on my heart. He has told me to go back to Uganda to start a home, a place where all of these children, and many more in need, can be cared for and shown His love. As I mentioned, there are about a hundred kids in the existing orphanage, and there are several hundred more orphaned or neglected children in the villages surrounding Jinja. God has placed a burning desire deep in my heart to reach these children for Him.
